The Selam Bag is named after Alem’s daughter, Selam. Alem is our cook at Carry 117, and makes breakfast, lunch, and coffee for all of our employees each day at the compound! The Selam Bag was first released in the early days of Carry 117, but has since been redesigned to represent Ethiopian culture through vibrant, traditional colors. This redesigned version of the Selam Bag was debuted in 2019 and continues to be a best-seller!

Selam is one of the oldest kids on the compound. She is known for having such a warm and caring personality and her smile lights up the whole room. You will notice her cooking with her mom, Alem or helping others at Carry 117. Selam is one of the Carry 117 children that would remember life before Carry 117 was born. She has seen it grow from just an idea to now being on year six of Carry 117. Selam is always wanting to help by putting tags on our bags while working at the compound. She loves getting the kids together and reading Bible stories for them.” - Henok Berhanu, Founder and CEO of Carry 117

Selam says, “Hi, I am Selam! Henok loves me the most so he named the best bag after me. I was also the first person to have a bag named after them. This bag can hold a lot, it can even hold a baby. I am so happy to be part of the Carry 117 family, and I am proud of my mom, Alem. I know God’s love because of the way my mom shows me love.”

Our customers have stated that this bag is one they carry for work, school, while shopping, and during their vacations. One has said, “I love using this bag when on vacation. It makes an amazing beach bag!”

Another one says, “The Selam Bag is the perfect bag for year-round use. It is sturdy, functional, and beautifully designed. I’ve been using it every day since receiving it!”

Selam’s name means “peace” in Ethiopia. When you are carrying a Selam Bag, we hope it brings you happiness and peace just like the little girl it’s named after brings to Carry 117. The Selam Bag is handmade with the traditional Ethiopian cotton fabric. It has 1 pocket on the outside and 3 on the inside. The bag measures 15" x 6" x 15.5". While each bag has one larger colored stripe on the front of it, the colors of the stripe vary. Some have a larger blue stripe, some red, some yellow, some green, etc. Each bag is one of a kind which make them even more unique!
